Gewerkengg Castle Author:Andrejka Čufer, November 2004)
In 1490 a local inhabitant of Idrija discovered mercury in a bleak, remote and densely forested area close to the Idrijca River while dipping a wooden pot in a spring. This discovery led to the opening of a mercury mine known Europe-wide. The once modest village of Idrija enlarged into a borough dominated by Gewerkenegg Castle, which served as the administrative headquarters and warehouse of the Idrija mine, as well as the stronghold against the hostile attacks of the Venetians and Turks. The original appearance of the castle is uncertain as, to date, its origin has not been systematically researched. Judging by the year dates and the Gothic elements, there is a good reason to believe that the castle was built in the first decades of the 16th century.
